Fiela se Kind
Directed by Katinka Heyns
Synopsis
The acclaimed drama based on Dalene Matthee´s award-winning novel. "Fiela se Kind" (Fiela's Child) is the story of a white foundling boy that is raised by a brown family. But the childs life changes irrevocably when white census officials discover him living across the established borders of society, and he is removed from his foster parents. "This is the moving story about a close family being torn apart by the social convictions of the day. It is the story of a mother´s enduring love and hope to see her taken son again. Fiela is a down to earth woman farmer who does not let anyone step on her. She raised a white castaway child, Benjamin, and teaches him the simple things in life."

For some reason my head busted wide open and I remembered I watched this in high school.
Sitting on a desk in class, watching a 360p video of this with my Afrikaans class, the memories...
I’m gonna give it a 5 because why not? Fuck it -

really enjoyed, even though just thinking about it makes me emotional. not too upset at some of the changes they made to “movie”-fy it, except letting them have sex before the reveal that he’s not her brother…that was kinda weird. i know it’s to build to the grand reveal, but it would feel a lot less weird if they just get it outward like they do in the play. Shaleen Surtie-Richards lowkey deserved an Academy Award, but that’s not here nor there. she was so incredible, and you just gotta root for this mother trying to get back her son. Jan Ellis does so great in the first half of the film as Benjamin and later Lukas. he is lowkey…

No. 34 of #Countdown200 (2021)
It is the universal story of a mother's love, but coming out in the dying days of Apartheid, it also threw a big cinematic middle finger to the government of the day. Benjamin/Lukas goes on an emotional and rousing journey through life when a census official discovers him in the care of a 'coloured' family.
Shaleen Surtie-Richards bowls you out as the plucky and unyielding Fiela, while veteran actor André Rossouw simultaneously terrifies you and makes your blood boil as the obstinate and super patriarchal Elias.

Watched this for the first time today... my parents always told me about it but I just never liked Afrikaans films, especially old ones but I was forced by my film school to watch it and I think it’s pretty good, I loved the characters and for a old film... I think it holds up pretty well.
