My heater is doing funny things today. Error code “water sw open”. Google isn’t being much help. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Ya I read that thanks. It’s the first hit in google. The question is answered by an appliance repair guy that just googled possible answers. Lol.
Raypak says “check to make sure there are no obstructions. Clean skimmer and pump basket and filter”. That’s not the issue here. I am clean. water is moving thru the system at 60gpm like always.

The heater sounds like it’s trying to fire. “Spark” is flashing and so is “no demand”. I am not calling for heat.

Ok. I’ve been working on it for the last hour. I unpowered it and powered back on.

if the heater is in “Remote mode”. It will fire up even if my automation isn’t calling for heat. I have even gone so far as to unhook my automation and it still fires up even know there is no call for heat.

Manual mode, it is functioning as normal.

I am confused. Are you past the "water switch open" problem and the heater is running?

Describe your current problem.

When I came around the corner to my heater this morning I could hear the electronic ignition trying to start every few seconds. Pump was not running because I had it turned off. The display was alternating “no demand” and “water sw open”.

I unplugged the heater

When I plugged the heater back in, “water sw open” was gone. I turned pump on circulate but made sure heat was off On my controller. The heater kicked into “spark” and fired up even know my controller was not calling for heat. I powered heater off and disconnected the 2 wire connection to the controller. Again, when I powered heater on, it fired up.

I switched heater from “remote” to “manual” and the heater functions as it should. In my opinion when Heater is on “remote” mode, the heater is always acting like there is a call for heat.

That was what would be expected with the pump not running. “water sw open” means there is no water flow which there was not.

No reason to do that. Just turn on the pump.

Where did you disconnect the 2 wire "firemans switch"?

So that says you need to open up the heater and see what is going on with the 2 wire connection there. It sounds like the 2 wires are shorted in the heater. Maybe a critter got inside and chewed the wire.

alw22. I am 99% sure you solved the problem. The 2 wire from my controller was too short in 2018 when I installed it so I spliced it. I cut the wire before the splice and the problem of it wanting to fire up had stopped. My multimeter is at work but I suspect that splice is bad and maybe a strand is poking thru. Thanks so much. Will follow up when I repair and test. Raining here now.

Hahha. Ya. There is always a detail that is left out that seems insignificant at the time.....I took great care in that splice. Staggered and soldiered it. Now that I think about it, it probably has water in it. Ouch. I’m going to fix that more carefully. Thanks again so much.

Get rid of the splice and replace the 2 wire cable. Any 2 wire cable will work.

FAQs

What does PS open mean on a pool heater? ›

The PS code indicates that the water pressure switch in the heat pump is open, meaning there is no water flowing through the heat pump. The heat pump requires a minimum of 30 gallons per minute flowing through it to operate.

Why is my Raypak water heater not turning on? ›

Check the Power: If your Raypak pool heater isn't working at all, the problem could be something as simple as a lack of power. Go make sure there aren't any tripped circuit breakers in the fuse box, then check that the unit's time clock is set to the “On” position.

How long should a Raypak pool heater last? ›

Often you need to replace a few essential parts, not the entire heater. Things like your climate, water chemistry, and maintenance habits will impact the lifespan of your pool heater. Pool heaters will last anywhere from 10 to 25 years.

Why does my Raypak pool heater keep shutting off? ›

If one day you wake up and your pool heat pump stops running, the first thing to check is your water flow. Without an adequate source of water, a pool heat pump automatically shuts down to prevent overheating. This is sometimes the cause of what many describe as a pool heat pump turning off and on.

Why is there no water flow to my pool heater? ›

The most common reason for low or no flow is that the baskets are full of debris. By checking and emptying both the skimmer basket (by the pool) and the pump basket (inside the pump) will free up the water flow, allowing the system to fully 'prime' and function at full capacity.

What is the best setting for a pool heater? ›

Pool water temperatures typically range from 78ºF to 82ºF. The American Red Cross recommends a temperature of 78ºF for competitive swimming. This coincides with good fuel savings. However, this may be too cool for young children and the elderly, who may require a temperature of 80ºF or higher.

How do I know if my Stack Flue sensor is bad? ›

1) Using a multimeter, set the device to resistance testing mode (The icon looks like a horseshoe). 2) Put each multimeter prong on the stack flue sensor terminals. If the resistance measures 0 it is bad, replace the stack flue sensor. 3.5 ohm or higher means the sensor is working.

Why is my pool heater not heating my pool? ›

Your heater may have inadequate water flow due to a dirty filter, closed valve, external bypass, reversed water connections, or pressure switch out of adjustment. It is also possible that your thermostat is out of calibration or needs to be replaced.

How do you reset a pool heater? ›

Reset your pool heater by flipping the breaker switch in the electrical panel to “off” and then “on.” Your breaker may be located in a disconnect box near your pool heater or in the breaker panel in your home.

What would cause pool heater to not ignite? ›

Tripped circuit breaker: The most common reason for a pool heater not turning on is a tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse. Check your breaker box and reset any tripped breakers or replace any blown fuses. ✓ Low water flow: If there isn't enough water flowing through the heater, it won't turn on as a safety measure.

How many hours a day should I run my pool heater? ›

On average, a well-sized heat pump for your pool might need to operate between 8 to 12 hours per day to maintain a consistent temperature. This ensures that the water remains at a comfortable level without overworking the system.

How do you fix an on demand water heater? ›

Check the gas valve and ensure that it is open, and that you have paid your gas bill. Check all sensors, wiring fuses, and electrical components to ensure they have not burned out. Ensure there is no condensation or debris on the burners that may cause them to not ignite.

Can you leave your pool heater on all night? ›

You should never leave your electric or gas pool heater on overnight because your energy bill will increase significantly. Deciding whether to leave your electric or gas pool heater on or off overnight depends on your usages and plans.

What does the code if mean on a pool heater? ›

The IF code stands for ignition failure, which means your heater tried to light, but it did not. The SB code stands for a keypad failure. Pool and Spa Expert: Randy Huckstadt. The keypad failure is typically just the membrane pad.

Which switch on a pool heater will close on proper water flow? ›

The first one is the pressure switch. This switch makes sure enough water is flowing through the unit before it will let the pool heater turn on. This means you must have the pump on and a clean filter for this switch to close and allow voltage to pass through.

What does water flow lockout mean on pool heater? ›

HVAC Technician: Michael Ferryman. The water flow lock out is indicating that the unit is not seeing correct water flow. If you are able to confirm water flow there it is likely not a blockage however this sounds like a failed flow switch on the unit.
